Virginia WAP Application Information

The Virginia Weatherization Assistance Program is a federally sponsored program that helps low-income households lower the costs of their energy related utilities. The program achieves this by implementing an array of energy efficiency measures based on the results of a comprehensive energy audit of the houses of qualifying households. Some of the energy efficiency measures implemented are:

  • Installation and replacement of broken windows and doors

  • Repair and replacement of non-functional home heating systems

  • Maintenance of the home air supply system

  • Insulation of floors, walls and attics

  • Implementation of health and safety measures

The Virginia Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is funded by the US department of energy and is locally administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). The program also benefits from funding from the Virginia LIHEAP program owing to the fact that it complements the program.

In order to qualify for the program, applicants need to meet a set of eligibility requirements. These eligibility requirements are based on the applicant’s income, area of residence, and participatory status in other social service programs such as AID for families with children, SSI, TANF and LIHEAP.
