Massachusetts MassHealth for Children (SCHIP) Application Information

Massachusetts MassHealth provides health insurance for low income individuals and families living in the state of Massachusetts. The program combines Medicaid and SCHIP to cover elderly, pregnant women as well as children. SCHIP program provides benefits to children while Medicaid takes care of elderly and pregnant women.

In order to qualify for Massachusetts MassHealth (SCHIP) program, you will required to meet certain income guidelines. Applicants, who have higher income that income limits set by the program, will not be able to qualify for the program. On the other hand, applicants with a private insurance can qualify for the program provided they are on low income.

You can apply for insurance for your children through MassHealth program if you are their parent living with them and children are under the age of 19 years. A child meeting the age and income limit can apply him or herself if not living with the family. Similarly, caretaker relatives can also apply for children living with them under the age of 19 years.

If one or both of the parents are unemployed, risk losing their jobs in near future, or are under employed, they can apply for MassHealth (SCHIP) to provide necessary health insurance to their children.

Applicants can download a form from MassHealth website or simply visit MassHealth Enrollment Center to get the forms. Applicants can also request form to be sent by mail by calling MassHealth Enrollment Center.

MassHealth Coverage Types

MassHealth provides different types of coverage to provide benefits according to eligibility and requirements of enrollees. Different coverage types available under the program are:

  • MassHealth Limited
  • Medicare Buy-In
  • MassHealth Parental
  • MassHealth Essential

Benefits available will depend on the coverage type you get as an enrollee of the program.

Eligibility Requirements

If you want to receive health benefits under MassHealth program, you will be required to meet certain requirements.

You will be required to meet following criteria in order to qualify for MassHealth (SCHIP):

  • You are parenting children under 19 years of age
  • Caretaker relative can receive MassHealth benefits if he or she is primary caretaker of a child under 19 years of age
  • If you are under 19 years of age, you can apply yourself and receive benefits. Living with a family is not necessary for enrolling in the program
  • You must be a resident of Massachusetts
  • You must be a U.S citizen or a legal alien
  • You are on low income and meet the income guidelines for the MassHealth program

However, if you are a pregnant women, disabled, blind, HIV positive, women under 65 with breast cancer or cervical cancer, you can receive health benefits in state of Massachusetts through MassHealth (Medicaid) program.

If your child already has health insurance, it will not render him or her disqualified for the MassHealth (SCHIP) program. However, your income has to be below the limits of the program to receive partial aid.

Apply by Mail

You can apply by mail after completing the application form for MassHealth. However, you will first have to get an application form. You can get it in two ways

  • Phone: Call 1 888 665 9997 to reach MassHealth Enrollment Center. You can request more information about the program as well as an application form to be sent to your mailing address.
  • Internet: You can get your application form by downloading it from the internet. You can download application form from MassHealth website.

After you get the form, you will be required to complete it in all respects, filling all the five pages and providing all the necessary information correctly. You will also be required to sing the form before you send it to MassHealth Enrollment Center.

Apply in Person

You can apply in person by visiting a community center near you. You will get all the information and application forms from your community center.
