North Dakota WAP Application Information

North Dakota Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides different weatherization services to households with high energy consumption. The purpose of these benefits is to increase energy efficiency of homes in the state.

Weatherization services reduce energy expenditure while making homes safe and healthy to live. These services are provided after an energy auditor has inspected the home. Energy auditor will decide which measures will help household save energy bills. Depending on the findings of energy auditor, a household may receive any of the following services.

  • Services for reducing air infiltration, which typically involves using caulking and weather stripping techniques.

  • Insulation services for attic, floor, and perimeter.

  • Windows and doors related services to prevent heat loss.

  • Furnace repairing services to improve its efficiency. In some cases, furnace can also be replaced.

  • Repairs to the house structure to protect weatherization measures

Weatherization measures benefit the home for long term. Homes can continue to save energy for a lifetime with most weatherization services. Some last for 10-15 years while others last for 30 years. Typically, furnace repairing lasts the shortest and requires repair or replacement again in 10-15 years.

North Dakota WAP is available for all income-eligible residents of the state as long as the cost of making improvements reduces energy cost. An energy auditor will determine the value provided against money invested to see if the home qualifies for any or all WAP services. General rehabilitation and cosmetic improvements will not provide a return on investment through reduction in energy costs. Therefore, they are not offered under WAP. These services are available for homeowners as well as renters. Renters will need to obtain permission in writing from their landlord to receive WAP services.

The program gives priority to certain households when providing its services. Generally, a household with a disabled or elderly person will receive priority. A household with children under the age of five may also receive priority for WAP services.

Unlike most other states, you can submit an application online for WAP in North Dakota. Your application will be automatically forwarded to your local community action agency who will provide the services after determining your eligibility for the program.
