Georgia WAP Application Information

Georgia Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) helps low-income households reduce their energy costs by providing number of energy-related services and benefits. Eligible households will receive these benefits free of charge. Georgia WAP aims to reduce energy costs by making homes energy efficient.

U.S Department of Energy (DOE) administers Georgia WAP. Funding from the program mainly comes from DOE but U.S Department of Health and Human Services, Georgia Power, and different local leveraged funds also make major contributions.

Georgia WAP is regulated through the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA). GEFA contracts with community action agencies, local government, and non-profit organization to distribute weatherization funds to eligible households in Georgia. The program covers all the counties of Georgia.

Georgia WAP aims to provide a safe and improved home environment through a series of energy-related services. Eligible households will receive various services including hot water tank repairing, pipe insulations, attic insulation, air sealing, and heating system improvements and repairing. These services are available for single-family homes, multi-family dwellings, and mobile homes. These are only one-time benefits so a household that has received weatherization services previously will not be able to receive these services again.

Georgia WAP gives priority to households with higher energy costs and low income. The program will put households on high priority if elderly, disabled, or children are living in it.

Weatherization services help households reduce their energy consumption. According to GEFA, weatherization can help households reduce cost of energy by $350 on average each year. These services bring down annual gas heating consumption by roughly 30%. Since most low-income households spend about 19% of their total income on energy bills, they can greatly benefit from weatherization services. Households receiving weatherization services will be able to save energy in for a long period. The fluctuations in energy cost and supply won't affect them as much as it would affect households without weatherization.
